I usually batter my fish when frying (I have a recipe for this as well) but decided to experiment with a buttermilk fried fish. The result is a crispy coating that’s super delicious.

What You’ll Need - Serves 2

  • 2 Large Hake Fillets

  • 250ml Buttermilk

  • 1 Cup Flour

  • 1 Tsp Baking Powder

  • 1 Tsp Paprika

  • 1 Tsp Garlic Powder

  • 1 Tsp Onion Powder

  • Salt & Pepper

  • Oil for deep frying

Prep - 30 Minutes

  • Season your fish fillets with salt and pepper.

  • Place the fish in a shallow bowl/plate and pour the buttermilk over the fish making sure it’s covered.

  • Place in the fridge to marinade for 15 - 30 minutes.

Let’s Get Cooking - 15 Minutes

  • Heat enough oil in a pan to medium to deep fry your fish.

  • While the oil is heating up, mix the flour, baking powder, paprika, onion powder and garlic powder. Season with salt and pepper.

  • Remove the fish from the buttermilk and place in the flour and gently coat the fish using a spoon or your hands.

  • Place the coated fish in the hot oil skin side up (the part of the fillet that has/had the skin should be facing up first)

  • Fry until golden brown 3-4 minutes and turn the fish over and repeat on the second side.

  • Place cooked fish on a paper towel to drain excess oil.

  • Best served hot.

Love,

V
